Issues with Adobe Reader 9.1 printing

On April 2nd, the Anaheim Public Library upgraded to Adobe Reader 9.1. This was because the Library Automation Team was receiving complaints that people from the public could not open their PDF files because they needed the features in the latest release. After upgrading to 9.1, it was discovered that people could only print the first page of their article on our Kyocera printers. An investigation shows that this issue also effects Cannon and Brother pritners, but not HP or Minolta. Kyocera sent the following web page link as information on Adobe's knowledge base informaiton.

• ROI (Return on Investment) - do they increase outreach, make you more visible

What we will do in the next two weeks:

• Diane - Contact Infopeople on possibility of participating - 2 hour format
• Irene - Contact YBPL
• Pam - OCLC and Apple

Tentatively - 1st week in June (5th target date)

4 hour unless it is a real winner with an exciting speaker then we might think about 6 with lunch brought in (more cost for the workshop)

MS Office 2007 docs & OpenOffice

The problem with MS Office 2007 documents is that they have to be saved in a version other than 2007 if you are planning on sending them to anyone who is not using the 2007 version. Now those of us who use OpenOffice (the open source software) have a translator available that should allow us to read Office 2007 documents. The OpenXML Translator allows you to

"Expand OpenOffice.org's document opening, saving, and conversion powers to Office 2007 documents with the Open XML Translator, a free plug-in intended for Ubuntu systems."

I'll have to try it at home tonight!

Tom Edelblute Recognized for Accompishments

At the Anaheim Library Division meeting on February 13, 2008, Tom Edelblute was recognized for two accomplishments. The first was completing the Villanova University certificate curriculum in IS/IT Project Management. The second was receiving the Technican Class for the amature radio (AKA HAM radio) operators license. This second one is important with his operating in the capacity as Communications Lead for Care and Shelter in the event of an emergency in Anaheim.

Anti-virus Scanning Solution

Hi folks-

PVLD is in the process of looking for a new comprehensive (anti-virus scanning, anti-spyware, etc.) virus protection software application for its entire network. Has to scan servers in addition to desktops. Would very much like to scan clients for spyware and malware in addition to viruses. Also, needs to scan messages on my MS Exchange 2003 server. Currently we use Sophos but do NOT plan to renew our contract with them; at this point, we favor Trend Micro but would like to know what other librarie are using.

Any thoughts on this issue?

I am working on an RFP for a Content Management System for the library and would like to solicit the group's knowledge in CMS. It will really be helpful to me if you are willing to share your RFP or any issues to watch out for during negotiation and implementation.

Anaheim Opens New Museum Space

So what does this have to do with library services? Well, the Anaheim Public Library has a Local History Room that oversees the Anaheim Museum operation. With that, the library automation team and city networking team have been working together to get the MUZEO open to the public. It is now open with an Imperial Rome exhibit, which is its final stop before it returns to Italy. You can learn more at http://www.muzeo.org/
